Letter to Mr. Schoor

Dear Mr. Schorr at Cox Cable,

I’m writing this letter to thank you and Cox Enterprises to express my appreciation and abundant gratitude on how wonderful and fulfilling the experience I had as being a member of the Cox Cable Internet Safety Tween Summit. My experience began after being appointed as your representative from Nevada, and being prepared and readied by Mrs. Stephanie Stallworth prior to leaving for Washington. Then my mother and I were graciously received and met by Mrs. Stallworth at Regan International airport last Monday July 20th, and she walked me through every step of the next four days preparing me, educating me, and directing me through the greatest experience I have had thus far in my life (my trip to Washington, which was my first, and the Internet Safety Conference.)

Day number one: Monday, after checking into our hotel and then on to a wonderful tour of our Nations capitol which included: The Washington Monument and the reflecting pond, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and Arlington Cemetery, all of which were quite awesome. Then we took a cab ride back to our hotel to get ready for the evening dinner and meeting at the J.W. Marriott with my fellow National Representatives. We had a great dinner and meeting which prepared us for the next day.

Day number two: Tuesday (the big day). We had breakfast and were brought next door to the National Press Club by our Cox representative, while our parents stayed back at the Marriott for a parent meeting. We were all met and presented at the summit by our representatives to John Walsh (America’s Most Wanted) and Lauren Nelson (Miss America 2007). With the press watching us and Cox cable’s Lobbyist, we began to discuss the Internet as it interacts with teens and younger children. John Walsh led the conference as he and Lauren Nelson asked us youth questions, and we related our experiences and thoughts in regards to the Internet and Internet Safety. It was quite a fulfilling one hour segment to which afterwards we were brought into the National Press Room where we met with our parents, Cox representatives, John Walsh, Lauren Nelson, Cox Capitol Hill Lobbyist, press from all over the country, and all of this was led by your Cox Enterprise representative; Necole Merritt. It was a great and exciting experience. Followed by a lovely lunch in the National Press Club’s cafeteria, where we prepared for our meeting on Capitol Hill.

Capitol Hill…Wow!!!!! I had a 3:30 p.m. appointment with House Speaker Harry Reid, and along with myself, my Cox representative Mrs. Stallworth, my mother, Cox Enterprises Lobbyist, and Photographer; we met with John Walsh and his assistant to meet with Senator Harry Reid. We were given approximately ten minutes to convey our message about the Internet Summit, take some pictures, and for me to deliver my package and relay my message to the Senator about “Tween” Internet safety. It was quite exciting especially when he finally acknowledged me and said, “My, what a lovely little girl voice you have.” I handed him the package and told him thank you Senator Reid for your time today. He left quickly, and our group dispersed, and we went on to our next Capitol Hill visit with Congressman Porter.

Our meeting with Congressman John Porter was amazing. He was kind, attentive, gracious, and extremely inquisitive of our Internet Safety Conference. He gave us about twenty minutes of his graciousness. He wanted to know all about the Internet and the problems it presents for us young tweens. By the way Mr.Schorr, Mrs. Stallworth did mention to him about your golf game in comparison to his……...and he reacted with a grin “I’m not quite sure of what they were taking about???” I spoke to Congressman John Porter, explained our summit meeting, as Mrs. Stallworth had prepared me to do, and gave him the presentation package. He promised to review it and do what he could with this issue.

After satisfactorily leaving Congressman Porter’s office, and America’s magnificent Capitol building we went back to our hotel and met my fellow representatives at the ESPN Zone restaurant. We had so much fun!

Day number three: Wednesday began at breakfast with my fellow representatives as we shared our experiences of the prior day. We discussed who had meetings on Capitol Hill on Tuesday and which meetings each of us had today. My meeting today was at 2:30 p.m. with Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. We took a cab over to the Capitol building, and again I was filled with an exciting feeling as we went into our “Wonderful” Nations Capitol Building. Congresswoman Berkley was in a Congressional meeting on the House floor when we arrived, she was expected to be late for our meeting, her assistant contacted her as per her anticipated timing and she concluded that she probably would not be speaking for twenty more minutes and if we went in the back door of the Lobby building escorted by her she would be able to meet with us for ten minutes in a private meeting room. Upon meeting with Congresswoman Berkley she was enthusiastic and responsive to the information I gave to her on the Tween Summit meeting. She was quite familiar with the prior two years meetings and received my package of information graciously, and promised to have her staff keep in touch with our progress.

We preceded back to our hotel quite satisfied and accomplished, and hopeful of like feelings from our peers and their meetings from today. We got ready for dinner and met with our fellow tween representatives and with the pressure of the prior days off of us we laughed and chatted and had a lot of fun. We had a happy and eventful dialogue where we all got a chance to express a happy moment, a successful moment, and/or a memorable moment. Most agreed the summit was the most successful moment, and most agreed that Capitol Hill was the most memorable, and all of us agreed to being happy and satisfied with being a chosen member of Cox Cable’s 2008 Tween Summit.

Some of us after dinner went on a tour of Georgetown only to get rained out, most of us said goodbye, because we were all leaving sometime the next day. Our goodbyes were bitter sweet; we had made such good friendships in such a short period of time. We promised to keep in touch via my blog that I had set up with Las Vegas Review Journal’s Al Gibes prior to my departure to Washington D.C. I took all of my peer representatives e-mails and promised to get back to them through my blog, to which as of today Sunday July 27, 2008 I have completed.

Day number four: Thursday we woke up hurriedly to pack up our room and check out of our hotel and prepare to get in as much touring before our flight left for Las Vegas at 10:00 p.m. We jumped in a cab, and headed for the Holocaust museum. This was quite a memorable and mentally exhausting experience. Sad, horrific, surreal, terrifying, inhumane, frightful, are just some of the words that come to mind when I think of a horrible human to human experience. All I can say is thank you God for America! We left there and had some lunch and proceeded on to the National Gallery of Art. We only had about an hour, but we ran through the museum and grabbed as much gusto and beauty as we could take before it closed. We left the National Gallery of Art and Mrs. Stallworth taught me how to operate the Metro system, we took it to Union Station and upon arriving I had a call on my cell phone from Mr. Al Gibes from the Review Journal in Las Vegas. We found a seat in the Union Station CafĂ© and I preceded my second interview with him. While I was interviewing with Mr. Gibes, Mrs. Stallworth’s daughter Savannah called the airlines to get status on our flight and she let us know that our flight had been moved up and we did not have much time to get back to out hotel, get our luggage, and get to the airport. I finished my half an hour conversation with Mr. Gibes to whom he also spoke with my mother and Mrs. Stallworth, and we ran for a cab to get us back to our hotel to retrieve our luggage and on to the airport.

We arrived safely at home in the early hours of Friday morning. I left for Washington a 14 year old Teenager, and came back to Las Vegas, my home, a 14 year old experienced in the Internet, educated in our Nation’s Capitol Hill process, and Washington D.C.’s historic phenomenon. And I feel I have become an open minded, appreciative, thankful, and determined teenager, with a desire to complete my undertaking as the 2008 Tween Representative for Cox’s Internet Tween Summit.

Thank you Mr. Schorr, Mrs. Stallworth, Ms. Necole Merritt, Cox Cable, and Cox Enterprises, and all that have been part of this extraordinary experience.

With Sincere Gratitude and Appreciation,
Krystina Kinney

P.S. Mr. Al Gibes from the Las Vegas Review Journal has kept in touch with me since I was accepted as a representative for the Tween Summit in Nevada. Mr. Gibes has had me set up a blog to which I have sent on to all of my fellow representatives, you can check out my blog at: http://krystinastweensummit.blogspot.com/.

P.S. Mrs. Stephanie Stallworth has been an amazing leader, teacher, and representative, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart.

P.S. Necole Merritt’s presentation of the Tween Summit was phenomenal and hopefully will continue as needed, for years to come.

P.S. Mr.Schorr you may not remember, I have met you through Mrs. Stallworth a few times in the past, most recently the dog show, at the Orleans Arena, but most importantly my respect, thankfulness, and gratitude are with you, for choosing me your 2008 Cox Cable Tween Summit representative from Nevada.

Tween Summit Day

The day of the Tween summit was a knowledgeable and an experience filled day. I met a lot of new people. There was some great quotes given by everybody and I'm writing this so everybody that reads this can hear the knowledge of teens and tweens (which are 8-12 year old's). One of my favorite quotes was said by 18 yr old Pat from New England, he was speaking and he said that the Internet was kind of like the Garden of Eden, because there are many plentiful apples out there but on the other hand there are many serpents trying to tempt you to do bad things. One of the most talked about topics that was shared at the summit was cyber bullying. It turns out that a lot of kids are cyber bullied, there was one boy there 18 yr old Justin from Arkansas/Kansas. He said he too was cyber bullied and it was terrible. He had a networking page and there was a truth box that he had on his page. One day he got a message from the truth box and it was saying terrible things about him, and he didn't know who was writing this because the person was incognito. He said it was a very painful experience and he did not wish it on anyone, because he was scared from it. There was also a 10 yr old boy Devante who had encountered somebody that was talking to him on his game account where he played games, and the child was saying he was going to beat him up and Devante said he was not afraid, because he just deleted the account and did not play games there anymore. There are many things that are terriable out on the internet and one of the topics that we talked about was that parents should talk to their kids about the internet and make it a conversation and not an interigation, because then if you yell at them for something then they are more apt. to hideing things from you. I got a lot out of the summit and hope to share it with many other people and fellow students at my new high school, because I hear things on the internet and I would hate that to happen to somebody that is one of my good friends.
I hope anyone that reads this really takes this under consideration?!?!?!?!?!?!

Last day in Washington

My last day in Washington was again fun and busy. It all started with the 4 of us getting up at 9:00 a.m. We finished packing, and we got some Starbucks. After we were ready we took a taxi to the Holocaust museum. It was incredible! But at the same time it was very heart-breaking to see all that happened during the Holocaust. We spent a lot of time at the museum so we could really see everything that happened. After we were done at the museum, we went to have a great lunch at Teaism, where my Aunt Debbie met us, she lives in D.C. We all had a delicious lunch at Teasim and we bought some tea to go also. After lunch we walked to the National Gallery of Art and walked around till they closed. Our flight was supposed to leave at 8:00 p.m. but we decided to check our flight status, and turned out our fight was delayed until 10:10 p.m. so we said," hey why don't we go and take the subway down to Union station. So we jumped the Metro (and we got there by way of my directions I may add.) When we were walking up the steps from the subway we got a call from the great Al Gibes who was interviewing me for his newspaper column in the Las Vegas Review Journal. We talked to him for about a half of an hour. During that time Savannah got a text message from the airlines saying that our flight was not delayed anymore it was actually scheduled to be at 9:40 instead of 10:10. At this time when we were talking to Mr. Gibes, it was 8:00p.m. We were shocked because we had an hour and forty minutes to get to our flight and we still had to get back to the hotel and get our luggage. We jumped in a cab and went to the hotel and grabbed our bags and threw them in the trunk of the cab, although we couldn't close the trunk because we had 12 suitcases between the 4 of us, we were quite a site drivign down Pennsalvania Ave. as we told the cab driver to drive as fast as he could!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We flew in the cab to the airport and ran to check our bags in. After we were done checking our bags, we went to the security check-in and when we were walking through secruity check, I found workman's booty's in a bucket and they were there so you wouldn't get your feet dirty when you were walking past the securitywithout your shoes on. (What a great idea, I know.) So we put them on and walked through. After we were all settled we got a bite to eat at this Mexican restaurant. And we were finally set and ready to go, and we soon got on the plane. We giggled, laughed, and ate the choclate cookies the size of the moon that my mom bought us earlier. We laughed some more and listened to our ipods, till we fell asleep, and didn't wake up till we got to Las Vegas. Again we were quite a sight after we got all of our luggage off the carasoul, and headed through the airport to our car. (Remember 12 bags)??? This was the end of a great and most memorable vacation.....................
I will keep a follow up of different things that happen like interviews and more........

Another BIG BIG BIG day!!!!!

Today I started my day off early again. I had a quick breakfast and then we went right to the Newseum. It was such a great experience, I had a lot of fun, and I also saw a lot of the things that I learned about in school, it was great to learn about them all again. At the Newseum one of the most tragic but interesting things was the short movie about September 11,2001. So many terrible things happened that terrible day and to see some of the news reports that I was to young to watch at the time really came to life in front of me and were very painful to watch. I enjoyed taking wonderful pictures of the exhibit only from the parts that I was aloud to take pictures in. After walking around and viewing the Newseum for about two and a half hours, we looked at the time and we had to leave so we could go back to the hotel to get ready for my 3rd and final press meeting with the BEAUTIFUL Congresswomen Berkley from Las Vegas, Nevada. After rushing to get back to the hotel to get ready for my meeting we realized we hadn't eaten so the four of us (me, my mom, my best friend Savannah, and her wonderful mother Stephanie) went to go and grab a quick bite to eat so I would not pass out in front of the Congresswomen. So after eating we realized that my meeting was in a half an hour. We rushed over to the Capitol building and made it to the Congresswoman's office at exactly 2:30p.m. After waiting for a while one of the secretary's told us that we were supposed to wait, because the Congresswomen was in a press conference and could not leave until she spoke. We'll a half an hour went by and the Congresswomen had still not spoken, so her sectary told us that we were going to have to go to the Capitol building from the Cannon building and meet with her in a conference room with other people having loud conversations, so i had to talk extra loud. The meeting went great and the Congresswomen was very warm and welcoming. She could really relate to the dangers on the Internet and she was very easy to talk to, so it made my part of the meeting a bit easier, because I was calm and well prepared. After the wonderful meeting we went back to the Newseum so we could finish our tour of the great museum. Me and Savannah went in to one of the exhibits and it was a 4-D movie that went back in time telling stories, it was very cool! The other really fun thing we did was we went and made our own news broadcasts. We got to be in front of the camera and give all of our positive attitude, and style a shot at being seen. We closed the Newseum at 5:00 p.m. and we went back to our hotel to get ready for are final dinner with everybody from Cox. There we had a FABULOUS dinner and we got to share our greatest memories of the trip, and I had to say that they were site seeing and talking with Senators and Congressmen and women about Internet Safety so that maybe we can make a difference in at least one child's life. dinner got over at about 7:30p.m. so a group of the tweens and parents went to the shops at Georgetown. On the way there it started to rain so we couldn't really do any of the outside shops which was hard, because most of them were outside. After it stopped raining (it was just drizzling, and we didn't mind if we got that wet) we went around looking for an ice cream shop and we found a great Hagen-daze. Finally after a long day we came back to the hotel and everybody has all gone to sleep, except for me. I really am tired and hope to get a good night's rest. I have a full day tomorrow also, so i hope you are looking forward to a great day filled with touring and other fun adventures.

My BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG Tween Summit day!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday morning began a very busy day in the life of a Tween Summit student. All the Tween Summit students (there are about 18 of us) and parents, and Cox Representatives met for breakfast really really really really really early (7:30 am). (yawn!) Everybody looked spiffy and professional! After breakfast, all the parents stayed at the hotel to participate in a really cool Internet Safety workshop sponsored by NetSmartz. (My mom really dug it a lot!) We all walked around the corner to the National Press Club for the Tween Summit and Press Conference that would follow. Actually are parents stayed at the hotel to participate in a really cool Internet Safety workshop hosted by NetSmartz. When us kids got to the Summit room we all sat there and chatted for a while until John Walsh and Lauren Nelson walked in. The Summit soon began and we got into really deep conversations about what kids really do on the Internet. Lauren Nelson and John Walsh gave experiences and in-put on different safety topics. So many different stories were shared about personal and other experiences to the group. After the Summit there was a conference that both students and parents participated in. John Walsh answered questions from parents and shared personal experiences. When the conference was over we went to eat lunch, and then was followed by an interview answering question about the Summit. After the National Press Club meetings were over we went to two meetings on Capital Hill. The first with was with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. John Walsh and I chatted with Senator Reid about the Summit and protecting kids. A ton of people took many many many pictures and my eyes are still seeing flash bulbs! Senator Reid is a very busy man and it was a great opportunity to get to talk with about this very important subject. After the meeting and pictures, we separated from John Walsh and we went to our next meeting with Congressman Porter. My friend Savannah (also from Las Vegas) and I joined forces and educated Congressman Porter and his staff about the Tween Summit. He was a very nice man and was very generous with his time. He seemed sincerely interested in what we had to say. My mom also got on board and shared some thoughts with the congressman about what she had learned. After our important Capitol Hill meetings were finished, we put on our "comfortable" walking shoes (by this time our feet were throbbing!) and walked down 1st street past the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. Savannah and I had a little bit of fun taking silly "touristy" pictures. We got in a stinky cab (at least it had air conditioning) and went back to the hotel. We quickly changed into our fun clothes and walked a few blocks to the ESPN Zone to eat dinner and have some fun with the other students participating in the Tween Summit. We had a long, fun, intense, draining, busy and rewarding day! WOW -- am I tired! More later................
My name is Krystina. I was chosen by Cox Communications to go to this Tween Summit from Las Vegas to participate in an Internet Safety Conference. I arrived on Monday and the journey began that day. Thanks to the Washington D.C. tour mobile I got to see many historical sites like Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln Monument, and the Vietnam Memorial. Wow! was it hot and tiring-I was drenched with sweat! (Thank goodness, I found an ice cream cart and thought it was a mirage!)

That night at the hotel I got to meet my fellow tween summit reps at a dinner hosted by Cox. Lauren Nelson, 2007 Miss America, also joined us at dinner. Cox explained what we were going to do the next day at the summit, and i admit that i was VERY nervous!
